Forty-Eight Powertrain and Performance
The 2017 Forty-Eight's Evolution V-Twin engine couldn't be more aptly named; first appearing on a Harley in 1984, this iconic V-twin engine has evolved from the Shovelhead and Ironhead engines. In the Forty-Eight, the air-cooled, 1200cc Evolution motor sends over 70 pound-feet of torque to the road at 3,500 rpm -- while returning up to 48 miles per gallon in combined city/highway riding. The Evolution engine has evolved through the years, right along with the advancements in motor technology at Harley-Davidson. Its aluminum heads and cylinders lighten the load of the engine and improve air-cooling efficiency, while its electronic fuel injection boosts efficiency, reliability, and means less routine maintenance. A modern 5-speed transmission helps deliver power out to the belt drive with crisp shifts.
Forty-Eight Style and Features
The style of the Forty-Eight can be traced back to the peanut tank bike, and others from just after WWII up until the 1970s. It comes set up with a low, solo seat, slammed handlebar, and custom forward-mount controls. Its iconic 2.1-gallon tapered peanut fuel tank still looks good today, and brilliantly meshes vintage style with modern attitude. The Forty-Eight's fat front wheel provides a striking presence up front and helps give the bike a smooth ride with solid, confident handling. The slammed, drag-style handlebar adds to the stripped down, minimalist look of the 2017 Forty-Eight motorcycle. The slammed handlebar is an old-school garage feature that gives this bike its aggressive, forward riding position. The single gauge on the handlebar provides all the information a rider needs while still maintaining the minimalist, stripped-down look. A speedometer with a gear indicator readout and a tachometer are included in the single gauge. The Forty-Eight's staggered, shorty dual exhaust provides a sweet sound -- and it looks good, too! With blacked-out the mufflers and other black and chrome accents, it is the perfect balance of custom street style and vintage appeal. Harley-Davidson developed the Forty-Eight's closed loop exhaust system to not only provide thrilling performance, but also to meet future worldwide emissions standards.
Comfort and Control Come Standard
With the style and performance of the 2017 Forty-Eight, you also get a surprisingly comfortable ride, thanks to the bike's perfectly positioned seat and forward-mounted controls. The low seat sits just 26 inches from the ground, thanks in large part to the bike's lowered suspension. Even with it's low profile, the seat of the Forty-Eight is more than ready for your next long weekend trip, thanks to it's all-day comfort. With the ergonomic forward-mounted foot controls, you can kick back and stretch your legs out whenever needed. When you step on the Forty-Eight's brake pedal and squeeze the front brake, you will feel the stopping power of 300mm brake rotors, a front caliper with 34mm pistons, and stylized rear caliper. Your new Harley will provide reliable stopping power, thanks to its upgraded all-aluminum front master cylinder, all-aluminum integrated rear master cylinder with reservoir, and stainless steel braided lines.
